Making a Book List

We leave in less than 4 weeks for our family vacation to North Carolina. Via Car. My blood pressure rises every time I think of two days on the road. If I could just blink and be there, that would be grand.

Once we get there, we'll be staying in a cabin on the Appalachian Trail. Sigh. My blood pressure mellows out every time I envision myself reading a book on the deck in 70-degree weather, while my children play sweetly at my feet.

Okay, so maybe not so much of the playing sweetly at my feet, but I am a-hopin' and a-prayin' they play nicely for at least one hour of every day, while I enjoy a good book on the deck.

Because vacation isn't complete without some good fiction, I need some suggestions. What are some must-reads in your opinion? (I will read a wide variety of fiction, but I won't read smut. I don't need my brain littered.)

It all depends on what type of fiction you like. Historical, contemporary, mysteries. . . If you've read and enjoyed the classics, you may like a Jane Austen mystery series written from the perspective of her diary by Stephanie Barron.Or there's a Louisa May Alcott mystery series by Anna Maclean. Those will be at your local library.

If you prefer Christian fiction, the church library has a decent selection, some of my favorite authors being Lawana Blackwell and George MacDonald. For light and fluffy Christian fiction, Lori Wick is an easy read. She has written both period and contemporary fiction. Her books are interesting, yet easy to put down when duty calls.

I hope this is helpful, maybe I'll see you in the library sometime!

Since you'll be staying on the App trail you might try the Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. It's not my kind of humor but my husband and father both loved it.
I personally can't go anywhere without a Karen Kingsbury book.

I just read about this book A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken, sounds like it would be good. Check out www.mindyrives.blogspot.com she wrote a few paragraphs about it. Hope you enjoy your trip!

I read a great book on my last cruise called "Final Exam; A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality." It was non-fiction. I found the book to be really fascinating. You can learn more about it here:

Just be careful with Bill Bryson. He can be a bit acerbic and off-color. We've rented a few of his travel books on tape and they were really funny but then they turned raunchy in places and we had to stop listening.
